Cumbria Tourism’s Large Hotel Of The Year Winner 2023-2024
We are incredibly proud to be the Winners of Cumbria Tourism’s Large Hotel Of The Year.
Storrs Hall is arguably one of the most beautiful hotels in the country, set in secluded grounds right on the shores of England’s largest lake – a location cherry picked for its spectacular views by the man who built it as a holiday home and party house. It’s winning recognition for its warm welcome and relaxed but luxurious hospitality – and the tradition continues. A Grade II* listed building in a National Park and Unesco World Heritage Site, its architecture and situation are rarer than you’d expect.
Historically it has hosted William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter, and the artist John Constable.
Guests are still treated to a generous Country House welcome, relaxation, great food and drink – all in this truly exceptional setting.
Storrs Hall has been trading as an hotel since 1897, when a 3 storey Victorian wing was added to the Georgian house with the intention of catering to the new tourism market.
The Hindle family bought Storrs in 1997 but left it in the hands of hotel management companies, who quite oddly neglected what potential it had, and diverted low budget coach party trade to it. It became something of a sleeping beauty until the family decided it was time for a change of direction. They recruited the current management team and began a process of investment in the building, and reinvigoration of the business direction and placement.
Investment in the property has been significant, installing luxury bathrooms of a particularly high standard throughout, and redecorating, retaining the collection of beautiful antique furniture for a homely feel. The original 18th C boathouse was revamped to become a uniquely luxurious and desirable guest suite. Followed by the rebuilding of 6 self-contained contemporary suites set in wooded grounds adjacent to the main house, maximising long lake views with sliding glass walls that open onto private terraces, each with a hot tub. These opened after the first Covid lockdown in 2020, popular for their combination of privacy and openness to the environment.
It is an elegant, small Country House Hotel, delivering a warm welcome and luxurious hospitality.
The majority of the 45 strong team were retained throughout all lockdowns and furloughs, continuing to help develop Storrs Hall as it moves forwards.
The next step is our automatic qualification for Visit Britain’s Awards For Excellence 2024-2025.
