Outdoor activities in the Lake District

Try something new on your holiday

Your adventures can be as action-packed or laid-back as you choose. There really is something for everyone and every fitness level.

Open-water swimming

We’re the perfect place for an introduction to open-water swimming and your claim to fame is Windermere is England’s largest lake and second deepest. If it’s your first time check out this wild swimming advice.

Pick your boat and tour

With VIP Lake Tours you have a choice of type and size of craft, plus different tours and timings. Check out their website and take your pick.

Hands-on sailing

Be a little more hands-on if you wish, with an introduction to old-school sail power, with Sailing Windermere. You can just sit back and enjoy the views. Ian offers two-hour tours for up to four people.

Rib rides, paddleboarding and kayaking

Graythwaite Adventure can help with all of them. Take a tour of the lake in their rib, or join them for an introduction to paddleboarding and kayaking. They do so much more so check them out.

Wakesurfing

An increasingly popular activity on the lake. The 10-mile-an-hour speed limit is perfect for wakesurfing, with specially designed boat hulls producing a large wave-like wash. Think of it as a cross between water skiing and surfing.

Chasing waterfalls

Climb up them or abseil down them - Canyoning or Ghyll scrambling depending on which way we’re going. It’s the ultimate all-weather activity. Check the providers here.

Scenic golfing

Enjoy a round of golf at Windermere Golf Club, for a fee, especially for Storrs guests. It’s five minutes away, and surely one of the most scenic courses in the country. Give us a call to organise this for you.

Clay Pigeon Shooting and more

A quintessential country pastime hosted at Michael Coates Shooting, they also provide archery and axe throwing. They’ll also provide activities for corporate events and private parties.

Beach rides

Relive the opening credits of Countryfile - ride heavy horses on the beach at Silecroft with Cumbrian Heavy Horses. Miles of hard sand are exposed at low tide and it’s totally invigorating.

Mountaineering was invented here

Who’d have thought so? Maybe it wasn’t too intimidating to consider taking those first steps here. Don’t try it on your own. There are plenty of qualified and insured mountaineering professionals who know great pre-approved routes.

Winter mountain skills

Up the ante a notch with the LDNPA Fell Top Assessors in winter, a scenic drive away over Kirkstone Pass. You can hire necessary equipment from them, as you learn how to ice-axe along the awesome Striding Edge.

Frankly terrifying

Honister’s Via Ferrata Xtreme is set on the towering flanks of Fleetwith Pike hundreds of metres above Honister Pass. A mix of miner’s routes, ladders set into cliffs and wire walks. You need to be capable, with nerves of steel.
