Wellness, Wild-Swimming and Hot Tubs… plus a Poem A Day
Wellness, Wild-Swimming and Hot Tubs… plus a Poem A Day
Wellness is big news, everyone is writing about it and advising you how to ‘do’ it. Here at Storrs we naturally have the magic ingredients and we didn’t think about it as something new and extra special – and then the penny dropped.
We’ve written a list of our Wellbeing brownie points:
- Starting with the fact you’re taking a break, you’re ready to relax and enjoy yourself and we’re here to help. That’s the first step.
- Just look at the views and take a deep breath, then exhale – we bet you already feel better. Windermere has pockets of Temperate Rainforest fringing its shores, one of the rarest habitats in the world growing new clouds and cleaning the already clean air.
- Watch new clouds grow.
- Wild swimming and cold-water swimming are big news on the wellness front – if you want to give it a go but are nervous, we offer free sessions every Monday morning throughout the Summer, (everything you need is supplied). We have soft shingly beaches to take a dip from, but then if you feel bold you can swim out to where it’s 85 feet deep. There’s Stand Up Paddleboarding too.
- Your claim to a superlative can be that your first wild swim was in England’s largest, and second deepest lake. That’s a confidence boost too, you did it!
- We have groves of woodland edging the lake, full of birds and birdsong all year sound, (particularly in Winter when flocks of finches live off the beech seeds). It’s been proven being in woodland improves the positivity of your mental health, there’s even a term for it, Shinrin Yoku; Forest Bathing. There is a quality to the light when you’re surrounded by trees which once you’ve experienced it, makes sense of the ‘bathing’ description. We’ve made a log seat from a fallen tree, where you can be wrapped in woodland facing out to the lake views, listening to the birdsong.
- Relax in a hot tub and immerse yourself in those views – the very heart of England’s largest National Park, worthy of Unesco World Heritage Site status. Our six Lakeside Hot Tub Suites and unique and luxurious Boathouse all have private hot tubs, plus terrace space for yoga if you’re so inclined – and we have seen guests enjoying yoga under the trees looking out over the lake.
- The two Wild Garden Suites literally have wild garden views of evergreens with woodland shrubs and wild flowers – taking peaceful seclusion to new levels. You could be miles from anywhere, shrouded in greenery but open to the skies. They’re very meditative spaces. As with all the Hot Tub Suites they’re purposefully designed with floor to ceiling glass windows that slide back to blur the boundaries between inside and out.
- The Four Lakeview suites have private terraces and hot tubs facing west over lake Windermere itself towards distant mountains. Offering leaf dappled privacy you can still watch life on the lake pass by, people messing about in boats. You have the benefit of misty morning sunrises, particularly in Spring and Autumn, plus vivid dramatic sunsets all year round.
- The Georgian Boathouse, contemporary to the main house, is unique in the lakes, (if not the whole country). Apart from its exceptional views – which are a huge asst in their own right, it has a large stone terrace with a lily pond adjoining the lake – the original fish pond for the kitchens, now it is filled with reeds and waterlilies. Wrapped by terraces with a firepit, comfortably furnished, and with a raised hot tub, it is something out of the ordinary as far as Boathouses go. Indoors a vast bed, squashy sofas, a generously stocked complimentary fridge, and a steam room in the state-of-the-art bathroom. Surely nothing more can be done to promote rest and relaxation to aid wellness?
- Last but not least, every bedroom is supplied with complimentary books, including one that has a poem for every day of the year. It’s a little thing, but sometimes that’s all it takes to start again, refreshed. Wellness takes many forms.
